Sfakia

Situated 72 kilometers far from Chania, at the Southeast, Chora Sfakion is a small village with 278 permanent residents. The village is historic for the intense desire of its people for freedom and their struggle against various conquerors. It is considered as one of the most traditional villages of Crete, with elderly people still insisting on wearing the traditional costumes and keeping firmly the traditions of freedom, hospitality and friendship but also of revenge. Of course, the invasion of tourism and the development of transport has somehow “smoothened” the strict customs of the past, but Sfakia, as the village is commonly called, is still known as the birthplace of the firm, honest and brave man.The old village is built at the hillside above the coast. It is here that boats bring from Aghia Roumeli the hikers of the Samaria gorge, to catch the bus to Chania. Accommodation in hotels and rooms to let is available as well as food and drink at the taverns and the traditional cafes of the village. Access is possible by public bus, as well as by private and rented car or motorbike. The village is also connected by boat with Loutro, Sougia, Palaeochora, Aghia Roumeli, Elafonissos and Gavdos.
