Maleme

Situated 16 kilometers far from Chania, at the West, just off the Old Road to Kastelli, Maleme is a beautiful historic village by the sea, with 700 permanent residents. It has been one of the fields of the “battle of Crete” during the World War II, as, due to its location it is there that were landed the German parachutists’ division. Today it is a pretty well developed village with a lot of tourists choosing it for holidaysIt is worth seeing the German military cemetery, made for the more than 4.500 German soldiers and officers who lost their lives on the island during the World War II. Accommodation facilities are plenty in Maleme: a good number of hotels, rooms to let and studios are available. You will also find a lot of taverns, restaurants, cafes and bars for food and drink and for amusement and nightlife. Access is possible by public bus with very frequent service from early morning to late evening, by taxi from Chania, and of course by private and rented car and motorbikes.
