Matala

A sandy beach 300 m long forms a semicircle with rocks ended in a small closed bay rising above its two sides. A series of artificial carved caves is formed on these rocks. e been staked by the Archaeological Office and the staying there is strictly forbidden. In these caves, tombs from the Hellenic-Roman and Christian Period were found. It is estimated that they must have been Pre-historical residences. There are also caves that one can visit by boat. Moreover, several shipwrecks have been found at Matala. Nevertheless, the entire area is fraught with archaeological and Roman findings. Southeastward of the today's settlement, columns of an ancient temple have been excavated, as well as a big marble reliquary a little lower to the beach. Westward of the village, on a hill, ruins of a wall from a fortress are visible, while on the top of the hill a building of Frictoria was found (where they made fires as signals). There is also an old church of Virgin Mary carved in a rock.
