Rethymno

The city of Rethymnon is situated at the Northern part of the island, almost at the middle of Crete and at the western part of the prefecture's territory, it is the capital city of the prefecture with approximately 28.000 permanent residents and many students, as it is the seat of several faculties, mainly of Humanities, of the University of Crete. Rethymnon is a beautiful and very active city. Being the commercial and administrative center of the prefecture, it offers any kind of facilities that a visitor expects to find in a modern city: banks, travel agencies, rent a car facilities and any kind of stores, from food and clothes to house equipment and souvenirs, are available. In case of health problems there is also a hospital and, of course, many pharmacies for purchasing medical products and cosmetics. Rethymnon is one of the spots of attraction of tourists, both Greeks and from abroad, mainly thanks to its long sandy beach, which is extended to a length of approximately 13 kilometers. As a result, accommodation is plenty, within the city center, at the beach, in the suburbs or in short distance from the city. Many hotels, studios and rooms to let or even small apartments for longer rent are available and can satisfy any desire and any budget. As in every other place in Crete, food and drink is abundant in the city. Taverns, restaurants of various tastes, street food, cafes, pastry shops and bars can be found everywhere. The locals like good food and drink and enjoy very much eating and drinking with friends; they are open enough and don't get surprised if they offer you a drink after a short talk.
