Ierapetra

On the site of the contemporary town, one of the most important cities of Crete was built. It was first named Kirva, by its founder. Later, it was named Kamiros, Pitna, Ierapitna and finally Ierapetra. It experienced its great prosperity in the historic times, 20th century BC, when it had taken over Praisos and almost the entire area of Sitia. It had also succeeded in taking over another powerful city, Larissa (today Kalamafka) and people from Ierapetra lived there. Nowadays, Ierapetra is a beautiful modern town, with marvelous golden beaches. Thanks to its mild climate and the good weather conditions, it has the longest sunlight and the least rainfall in the entire island, consequently an ideal place for holidays both in winter and summer. From Ierapetra, we can visit the beaches east and west of the town, and the islet called Chrissi.
