Sitia

This district comprising 45 villages with the pretty main town of Sitia, is one of the most unspoiled areas of Crete, made more attractive by the warm hospitality and geniality of its habitants. The town today was rebuilt in a shape of an amphitheatre in the corner of the bay of Sitia in 1870 by the Turks, have been destroyed by earthquakes and pirates at various stages and still retains a Venetian Castle. The whole district abounds in archaeological and historical interest from the Minoan period  onwards stretching across the island to the south, the famous excavations at Kato Zakros and Makrygialos with its beautiful sandy beach, to the eastern tip of the island where you find Itanos and the famous Palm Beach at Vai and to the west in the isolated mountain villages.
