Avdou

Avdou (431 inhabitants in 2001) is a homonym village and district of the province Pediadas and Municipality of Chersonisos in Heraklion. Located in the middle of the verdant plains of Lagada. The name should probably name the prophet Avdiou whose the temple was in the  position Linen. There are interesting illustrated churches around the village. From Kastrofylaka (K94) refers Avdhu with 253 inhabitants in 1583. West of the village at an altitude of 760 m from the northwest slopes of the hill Louloudaki is the cave of Agia Fotini. At the east is the cave of  Phaneromene. Both of them are very interesting for archeologists. It is the birthplace of archaeologist Stephen Xanthoudides and  Kagiampi Nicholas, who was active during the Revolution of 1821 and fought in Missolonghi and was flagshiper of Karaiskaki, and Ioanni  Ntafoti, who excelled in the Revolution of 1897. For this reason, the Avdou has acquired the nickname Kapetanochori.
